How can I make my writing less cliche', but give it imagery as well?

I'm 15, and lots of people say I overuse expressions or adjectives. I want to write a YA novel, but I am scared that I won't write it good, thats why I often put it off. How do I stay focused and confident while writing it? Your advice?
