How can I clean a suede newsboy cap?

I know, I know. The newsboy cap is so three seasons ago, but I love it. Sue me. Anyway, what I want to know is how can I clean the cotton lining around the cirference (it needs to be cleaned badly because I've had it for so long and "forehead" makeup and hair products got to it) without ruining the suede too much, if in fact the suede will be ruined? The suede looks a little worn and broken in already which is what I like, but I don't want to destroy the hat. I've heard vinegar or alcohol works. Suggestions?
