How would you descride the political principle that lay behind President Nixon's handling of foreign policy?

It was called "Realpolitik" and consisted of putting purely practical considerations like economic and political advantage ahead of any ideals or philosophic leanings. As Machiavelli once observed, it's not the means or the ends that matter, it's the results. Despite his abysmal record at home Nixon was actually a fairly good Foreign Policy President.
