What should shy people like me say in a dead silence situation?

okay so yesterday in my hometown colombia i went to hang out with some friends of ma sister and brother...i was probably the quietest person their..and then one person had the nerve to say why so quiet.....he is right.....i would talk but i don't know what to say or i am just shy...any help
