How does a spaceship accelerate in space?

The jet blast from small rocket engines creates a force that is applied to the spacecraft in the opposite direction of the jet blast. A spacecraft can also use the gravity of planets as a kind of slingshot effect to accelerate. As the approach the planet, the gravity pulls them in and they accelerate. Once they reach a particular velocity, they then get slung away from the planet at an accelerated speed.
