Every time I try to write it just sounds awful when I re-read it, has anyone got any tips?

Keep rewriting the chapters. When you read them afterwards, pay more attention. What works? What doesn't? Try using sentence fluency, where you use some short sentences and some long, next to each other. That helps sometimes. Use a thesaurus. Good luck. Just remember: any reader can become a writer.
